Dr. Wesley Gray

Wes Gray has published multiple academic papers and four books, including Quantitative Value (Wiley, 2012), DIY Financial Advisor (Wiley, 2015), and Quantitative Momentum (Wiley, 2016). After serving as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Dr. Gray earned an MBA and a PhD in Finance from the University of Chicago (having studied under Nobel Prize winner Eugene Fama) and then worked as a finance professor at Drexel University.

Dr. Gray’s interest in bridging the research gap between academia and industry led him to found Alpha Architect, an asset management firm that delivers affordable active exposures for tax-sensitive investors. He is a contributor to multiple industry publications and regularly speaks to professional investor groups across the country.

Meb Faber

Mr. Faber is a co-founder and the Chief Investment Officer of Cambria Investment Management. He is the manager of Cambria’s ETFs and separate accounts. Mr. Faber is the host of The Meb Faber Show podcast and has authored numerous white papers and leather-bound books. He is a frequent speaker and writer on investment strategies and has been featured in Barron’s, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Mr. Faber graduated from the University of Virginia with a double major in Engineering Science and Biology.

Corey Hoffstein
CIO, Newfound Research

Corey Hoffstein

Corey is a frequent speaker on industry panels and contributes to, ETF Trends, Forbes and Great Speculations blog. He leads Newfound’s quantitative asset management portfolios, which are focused on risk-managed, tactical asset allocation strategies driving investment decisions in excess of $1 billion. Corey was named a 2014 ETF All Star by Newfound Research was awarded 2016 ETF Strategist of the Year and was named as a 2017 finalist.

Corey holds a Master of Science in Computational Finance from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Cornell University.

Carol Derk

Carol Derk is a partner with Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and is a member of BLG’s Securities and Capital Markets Group, the National Leader of BLG’s Derivatives Group and the Co-National Leader of the Cryptocurrency and Blockchain Group. Carol practises in the area of securities law, specializing in derivatives, investment funds, cryptocurrencies and blockchain. She works extensively for managers of investment funds, particularly in the area of product development. Carol also has an extensive derivatives practice, including negotiating documentation, advising on regulatory compliance matters and developing new derivatives-based investment products. More recently, Carol has also developed a practice in the blockchain and digital asset space, advising clients that are developing products and services focused on cryptocurrencies and distributed ledger technology. Carol is a regular speaker at seminars and conferences on derivatives and investment funds. She is a recipient of the Women’s Executive Network (WXN) 2017 Canada’s Most Powerful Women: Top 100 Award, is recognized as a leader in her field by Derivatives Week and has been selected by her peers for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in Canada 2018 in the field of mutual funds law.

Patrick Cleary
COO & CCO, Alpha Architect

Mr. Cleary is currently the Chief Operations Officer/Chief Compliance Officer of Alpha Architect where he oversees firm operations, compliance and cybersecurity.

Previously, Mr. Cleary served as Director of Strategy and Corporate Development for Algeco Scotsman, a multinational leasing and manufacturing company. Before Algeco Scotsman, he was a Project Leader for the Boston Consulting Group. In that capacity he advised clients across a variety of industries in the US, Europe, and Africa.

Mr. Cleary also served as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps.
He holds an MBA from Harvard School of Business and a B.S. in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

Michael Philbrick
President, ReSolve Asset Management

Mike has over 25 years of experience in investment management, including nine years as a Portfolio Manager, and is a Chartered Investment Manager and Accredited Investment Fiduciary.

He is currently one of the Portfolio Managers for the ReSolve Adaptive Asset Allocation Fund, the Horizons Global Risk Parity ETF, and ReSolve’s managed accounts. Prior to co-founding the ReSolve in 2015, Mike was a Portfolio Manager at Dundee Private Wealth, Richardson GMP and Macquarie Private Wealth. Mike also served as Branch Manager at Scotia McLeod, Richardson GMP and Macquarie Private Wealth. Mike is co-author of the book “Adaptive Asset Allocation: Dynamic Global Portfolios to Profit in Good Times – And Bad” (Wiley, 2016), and many investment related articles and whitepapers. Mr. Philbrick graduated from Carlton University with a degree in Economics, and has earned both Chartered Investment Manager® and Accredited Investment Fiduciary® credentials.

Art Johnson

Art’s career has taken him down many avenues of interest in the finance world. He has been a regulator, serving both as a manager of the Alberta Stock Exchange trading floor and an Assistant Manager of Surveillance at the Alberta Stock Exchange. He leveraged that experience into the world of portfolio management, and is today considered one of Canada’s premier “quant” portfolio managers.

Prior to joining SmartBe, Art ran a quantitative wealth management team at a major Canadian bank. His team consistently ranked in the top 3% among the bank’s advisory teams and was one of the 50 winners of the PriMe Award following an independent review of 7,000 advisory teams by Pricemetrix.

Rod Heard
