Speakers

Dr. Wesley Gray
CEO, Alpha Architect

Dr. Wesley Gray is the founder and CEO of Alpha Architect. He earned his PhD in finance from the University of Chicago, studying under Nobel Prize winner Eugene Fama. He then took a post as finance professor at Drexel University. But Wes couldn’t ignore the large gap between academia and industry when it comes to research, so he founded Alpha Architect with the mission of empowering investors through education. Wes is a former captain in the United States Marine Corps, an Iraq war veteran, and father of three children. He lives with his wife and kids in the suburbs of Philadelphia.

Wes writes for multiple industry publications and regularly speaks to professional investor groups across the U.S. He has published multiple academic papers and four books, including Embedded (Naval Institute Press, 2009), Quantitative Value (Wiley, 2012), DIY Financial Advisor (Wiley, 2015), and Quantitative Momentum (Wiley, 2016).

Dr. Jack Vogel
CIO, CFO Alpha Architect

Jack Vogel conducts research in empirical asset pricing and behavioral finance. He is a co-author of DIY FINANCIAL ADVISOR: A Simple Solution to Build and Protect Your Wealth and QUANTITATIVE MOMENTUM: A Practitioner’s Guide to Building a Momentum-Based Stock Selection System. His academic background includes experience as an instructor and research assistant at Drexel University in both the Finance and Mathematics departments, as well as a Finance instructor at Villanova University. He has a Ph.D. in Finance and an MS in Mathematics from Drexel University. He graduated summa cum laude with a BS in Mathematics and Education from The University of Scranton.

Nicole Boyson
Professor, D’Amore-McKim School of Business

Professor Nicole Boyson has been at the D’Amore-McKim School of Business since 2004. She holds a Ph.D. in Finance from The Ohio State University, an MBA from Case Western Reserve University, and a BBA from Kent State University. Her research and teaching interests fall in the area of investments, household finance, and corporate finance, with a focus on regulatory arbitrage, hedge fund management, and hedge fund activism. Her work has been published in the highest-ranked journals in the field of Finance, and she regularly interacts with the media.

Prior to joining the DMSB faculty in 2004, Professor Boyson was an Assistant Professor at Purdue University. Prior to joining Purdue, she was a manager for Ernst & Young, the VP of Investments for Pension Consulting Services, an analyst for Third Federal Savings and Loan, and a senior accounting at KPMG Peat Marwick.

A Certified Public Accountant, Professor Boyson serves as an Associate Editor for the Journal of Corporate Finance, is a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the Financial Analysts Journal, has been a member of numerous program committees of professional organizations, and acts as an ad-hoc referee for several top academic journals. Professor Boyson was named the D’Amore-McKim Best Teacher in 2016.

Meb Faber
Co-founder & CIO, Cambria Investment Management

 

Mr. Faber is a co-founder and the Chief Investment Officer of Cambria Investment Management. He is the manager of Cambria’s ETFs and separate accounts. Mr. Faber is the host of The Meb Faber Show podcast and has authored numerous white papers and leather-bound books. He is a frequent speaker and writer on investment strategies and has been featured in Barron’s, The New York Times, and The New Yorker. Mr. Faber graduated from the University of Virginia with a double major in Engineering Science and Biology.

Dr. Tommi Johnsen
Former Director of the Reiman School

Tommi Johnsen is the past Director of the Reiman School of Finance and a tenured member of the faculty at the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. She has worked extensively as a consultant and investment advisor in the areas of quantitative methods and portfolio construction. She taught at the graduate and undergraduate levels and published research in several areas including: capital markets, portfolio management and performance analysis, financial applications of econometrics and the analysis of equity securities. Her publications have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed journals and she is currently working on a book about research-backed investment ideas that is under contract with Palgrave/MacMillan.

Steven Young
Quantitative Software Engineer

 

Steve has a bachelor’s degree in Actuarial Science and Economics, and a master’s in Quantitative Finance from the University of Waterloo. He also has a certificate in Data Science and Machine Learning from Ryerson University.

Steve has significant experience developing financial software, consulting, managing risk measurement teams, and algorithmic trading. He has published peer-reviewed research papers on a machine learning ensemble he developed.

Steve served in the Canadian Armed Forces as an Artillery Officer with the Primary Reserve.

Rod Heard
Co-Founder & CEO, SmartBe Wealth

An engineer by training, Rod spent 30 years as a corporate executive, strategic consultant and entrepreneur before leading the charge at SmartBe Wealth. Tenacity, passion and integrity are core to his approach to commercialization and governance. Rod is on the Board of Advisors for Nanoprecise Sci. Corp. and sits on the advisory council for Diversity Technologies Corporation (DI-Corp). He volunteers as a board member of YMCA Calgary. Rod holds the ICD.D designation from the Institute of Corporate Directors.

Art Johnson
Co-Founder & CIO, SmartBe Wealth

Art started trading on the Alberta Stock Exchange at 18 and was soon promoted to manager. In that position, he helped IBM programmers automate the trading floor in the late 1980s. From that point on he knew quant was the future. Later, in the 2000s, Art would be one of the first portfolio managers to bring quant into Canada. Art is today considered one of Canada’s premier Quant Portfolio Managers.

Before joining SmartBe, Art led a quantitative wealth management team at a major bank. The team consistently ranked in the top 3% of the bank’s advisory teams and was one of 50 winners of the PriMe Award following an independent review of 7,000 advisory teams by Pricemetrix.

Corey Hoffstein
CIO, Newfound Research

Corey is a frequent speaker on industry panels and contributes to ETF.com, ETF Trends, Forbes and Great Speculations blog. He leads Newfound’s quantitative asset management portfolios, which are focused on risk-managed, tactical asset allocation strategies driving investment decisions in excess of $1 billion. Corey was named a 2014 ETF All Star by ETF.com. Newfound Research was awarded 2016 ETF Strategist of the Year and was named as a 2017 finalist.

Corey holds a Master of Science in Computational Finance from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Cornell University.
