Dr. Wesley Gray
CEO, Alpha Architect

Dr. Wesley Gray

Wes Gray has published multiple academic papers and four books, including Quantitative Value (Wiley, 2012), DIY Financial Advisor (Wiley, 2015), and Quantitative Momentum (Wiley, 2016). After serving as a Captain in the United States Marine Corps, Dr. Gray earned an MBA and a PhD in Finance from the University of Chicago (having studied under Nobel Prize winner Eugene Fama) and then worked as a finance professor at Drexel University.

Dr. Gray’s interest in bridging the research gap between academia and industry led him to found Alpha Architect, an asset management firm that delivers affordable active exposures for tax-sensitive investors. He is a contributor to multiple industry publications and regularly speaks to professional investor groups across the country.

Art Johnson
Founder & CIO, SmartBe Wealth

Art’s career has taken him down many avenues of interest in the finance world. He has been a regulator, serving both as a manager of the Alberta Stock Exchange trading floor and an Assistant Manager of Surveillance at the Alberta Stock Exchange. He leveraged that experience into the world of portfolio management, and is today considered one of Canada’s premier “quant” portfolio managers.

Prior to joining SmartBe, Art ran a quantitative wealth management team at a major Canadian bank. His team consistently ranked in the top 3% among the bank’s advisory teams and was one of the 50 winners of the PriMe Award following an independent review of 7,000 advisory teams by Pricemetrix.

Ryan Kirlin
Head of Capital Markets, Alpha Architect

Ryan works to assist financial advisors and institutional clients in building ETF portfolios and finding tax-efficient investment portfolio solutions for their clients.

Ryan began his career at the New York Stock Exchange. As part of the Exchange Traded Fund Group, Ryan worked with ETF issuers to launch over 650 exchange-traded funds, which makes up about 20% of the existing ETF market. He also assisted in building indexes for ETFs, participated on weekly calls with the SEC trying to get approval for innovative ETFs that fell outside the standard rules, and guided new ETF companies through the process of taking an ETF to market. He then transitioned to RevenueShares to be their Head of Capital Markets, which during his time grew from $450 million to $1.1 billion in assets under management and was eventually sold to the mutual fund company, Oppenheimer Funds. In September of 2017, Ryan joined Alpha Architect.

Ryan graduated with B.A. in Economics from Fordham University. He is a CFA Level II Candidate.
